When considering traveling in the U.S., Nashville, Tennessee most likely isn’t the first town that pops into people’s minds. But this small southern city (less than 700,000 residents) located in the northern portion of the state along the Cumberland River is teeming with talented musical acts and culinary delights that will enliven the senses. Travel + Leisure included Nashville in its list “Best Places to Travel in 2014.”
The state’s capital is America’s second biggest center for music production (after New York City) and is home of the beloved Gibson guitar. To get an idea of the music industry’s strong presence, take a stroll down Music Row. Situated southwest of downtown, hundreds of businesses associated with gospel, contemporary Christian, and country music are nestled along 16th and 17th Avenues South, including RCA Studio B where Elvis recorded many songs. Music Row is the entertainment hub for the city.
There is a way to combine your passion for music and love of tennis in Nashville while also supporting a great cause. The Music City Tennis Invitational (MCTI) is the country’s longest running music-related charity tennis tournament (founded in 1973). Proceeds go to Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Unfortunately, the tournament has already occurred this year (April 26 – 27), but check their website for news on the 2015 tournament. Enjoy a benefit concert before taking to the court to play doubles round robin. But don’t worry if you don’t have a doubles partner. You can still register and one will matched to you.
The Centennial Sportsplex Tennis Center is located in Midtown within walking distance of Centennial Park, Vanderbilt University and an abundance of shops and restaurants. The center has four indoor hard courts and 13 outdoor hard courts. If you’re in Nashville for an extended period of time, consider taking one of their clinics or private lessons. Courts are also available to reserve by calling 615-862-8490.
