Adult Tennis Camps

For some, “summer vacation” doesn’t conjure images of sipping margaritas on white sandy beaches or of an exotic adventure like hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. For some dedicated tennis players, the ideal summer vacation is spent at an adult tennis camp—drills, cardio tennis, round robins, and personal instruction to take your game to the next level.

For those tennis enthusiasts, keep reading. Below is your guide to the ultimate tennis camp vacation.

Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks

Holding the distinction of being named by Tennis Resorts Online the number one tennis camp in the world for 2008 – 2013, Roy Emerson Tennis Weeks are for the truly dedicated with five rigorous hours of tennis instruction per day for five and a half days.

Located at Switzerland’s prestigious Gstaad Palace two hours from Geneva, the camps offer guests age 16 and up the opportunity to train under the watchful eye of Emerson—winner of 28 Grand Slam titles. His staff of highly skilled pros, including his son Antony, flies in from some of the world’s best tennis centers.

The ratio is one pro for every three or four guests on outdoor red clay courts. Emerson and his staff stress for individuals to improve, not to alter, their games during the weeklong camp. Among the perks included in the package are room accommodations, three meals a day (including Swiss breakfast buffets, a picnic in the Alps, and a dinner at a Swiss restaurant), a sports massage, 25 hours of tennis lessons, and unlimited use of the Jacuzzi, sauna, and steam room.

Topnotch Tennis Camp

Located just five miles from the picturesque village of Stowe, Vermont among the Green Mountains, Topnotch Tennis Camp is set on the 120-acre estate of the Topnotch Resort & Spa. Under the direction of Milan Kubala—formerly ranked in the top 10 NCAA—camp guests of all skill levels will improve both their mental and physical game.

Ranked by Tennis Resorts Online as third top tennis camp in the world, the staff utilizes a “Play to Win” method focused on four categories: stroke production, footwork, match strategy, and matching personal playing style to the best equipment. An adult tennis academy where guests can choose between three and five hour workshops is available in July and August.

However, a range of activities and clinics are provided in the nonpeak season (September – June), including an abbreviated version of the summer three-hour clinic, cardio tennis, double tactics, match play clinic, and private lessons.

The Junior Tennis Academy accepts children between the ages of 5 and 14 years and sorts them into lessons based on their ages and ability level. Topnotch also provides a special 10 and Under Tennis Program, utilizing a “right sized learning method” to help immerse children into the world of tennis and get them excited for the game.

“Tennis Fantasies” at John Newcombe Tennis Ranch

The two “Tennis Fantasies” camps are an extension of the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch, which is located in the Hill Country of Texas, 30 minutes from San Antonio. Newcombe—former number one player in the world—founded the ranch in the 1960’s with former Trinity University coach Clarence Mabry. “Tennis Fantasies” allow guests to learn from and play with a roster of tennis legends in two one-week camps.

A yearly men’s-only camp is for five nights/six days and is held from October 19 – 24 in 2014. The list of tennis legends attending this year includes John Newcombe, Roy Emerson, Dick Stockton, and Geoff Masters. Among the perks camp attendees experience are three meals a day with the pros, daily clinics with the legends, and team practice with the tennis greats.

The women and men’s camp occurs in March of 2014 and features similar perks as the men’s only camp. However, this “Tennis Fantasies” is for three nights/four days and four legends (John Newcombe, Roy Emerson, Owen Davidson, and Ross Case) are in attendance.

But if you are unable to make “Tennis Fantasies,” John Newcombe Tennis Ranch—holding the fourth slot in Tennis Resorts Online top tennis camps—offers year round instruction for individuals, families, and children of all ages and abilities. With a ratio of four students to every pro, guests can take their game to the next level on the ranch’s 27 hard courts and four hydro clay courts.

Located in Tampa, Florida, Saddlebrook Tennis Hopman Program is one of the world’s largest tennis facilities with 45 courts offering all types of surfaces seen at every major tournament, including Wimbledon-style grass. In addition to the program’s high rankings among tennis publications and resources, Saddlebrook’s resort has also received accolades.

After five hours of intensive clinics, guests can peacefully soak or float the soreness away in the resort’s 500,000 Superpool or swing by the European-style spa. If not everyone in the family is a tennis enthusiast, two Arnold Palmer golf courses are available onsite. Both adult and junior rigorous Hopman-inspired camps are offered throughout the year for everyone from beginners to pros. Video analysis, match play, and activities such as red robins are offered throughout guests’ stays.

While working on different aspects of one’s tennis game, guests might bump into members of the U.S. Davis Cup Team or individuals on the Pro Tour training on surrounding courts. And if you have a child passionate about tennis and wanting to take his or her game to the next level, Saddlebrook also offers a world-class prep school to help kids achieve their dreams of snagging a Division I NCAA scholarship or playing professional tennis.
